So I’m going to be changing my muffler soon. Now I would like to have the replacement welded in, but so far the prices I’m getting... well let’s just call them big. Is there any real big advantage to welding over clamping? If not, I could just do it myself and save quite a lot of money. Of course I could always get it welded in afterwards if I find someone to do it cheaper.
What say you, oppo? Is it worth it to weld? Is clamping sufficient?

It’s worth welding as exhaust leaks are always no bueno.

Are the prices from an exhaust shop? If so, maybe you can try looking for a reputable welding shop instead? When the catalytic was stolen from one of the trucks, we had the replacement welded on by the guy who made our gate some 10 years ago. We visited his place one weekend, let him do 10 mins worth of work, and tipped him a twenty.

Clamping is plenty sufficient as long as the mating surfaces can seal properly. But I think the application is important, too. If this were an off-roading vehicle, I think I’d want it welded.

If you had a straight system, then probably not, the flow will go one way. In front of a muffler that could generate back pressure then I would be more hesitant as a camp is a bit difficult to get a good seal on.
However given the shoddy job I’ve seen some muffler shops do, not sure that is a guaranteed solution.
Welding = simpler (exhaust is one piece), potential better seal, better ground clearance (depending on where you aim your u-bolt.
Clamping = convenient (rent pipe expander, buy clamp)
I think my muffler shop charges like 20-30$ for a muffler that is in a straight section. What are they charging?

Yeah, one of the better known ones. That’s a good idea, seeing as it’s just the muffler and not the whole exhaust.
I’ll have to look around for someone.

It’s my dd. Not an off road vehicle, but it may occasionally see light off roading.

That was the way I was thinking, but the dollars are many and the budget... sort of isn’t.
I’m going to have to poke around for a better price if I’m going to weld.

Including the muffler, they want over 700 for the job. I can pick up the muffler for about 150-180.

+1 to this. There's a ton of welders out there who need cash.

Just make sure they really know what they’re doing, and that they’re confortable working with the exhaust (whether it’s still on the car or removed). Last thing you want is for an inexperienced welder to set your car on fire, especially if the welding takes place anywhere near flammable materials such as the gas tank, grease, etc.

Could clamp it and take it to be welded when you have the time/money, no?

Only my muffler is clamped, the other connections are gaskets bolted together. That’s for ease of installation. I put it together myself and it worked. Old exhaust shown.

Any local car guys and/or Jalops/Oppos around you that might be willing to lend a welder and some time for a 6-pack of nice beer?

What, really? $500 to just weld on a muffler? I’ve had one crush bent system built for $150 from the headers back, and another mandrel bent system for $200 or so. That really is overpriced unless they are doing a full performance exhaust with v-bands and some crazy quality welding on some very expensive pipes.
I guess it depends, but that seems pretty pricey. Not in Washington by chance are you?

Toronto, Ontario, Canada. To be fair this is probably one of the best and therefore (most expensive) shops in town, and our dollar does suck right now. Though the muffler cost I quoted was in CAD, tax in.

Not sure. I know one that was in the area but I think he’s gone right now.

Could do. Actually, WILL do if I don’t find someone cheap. Thanks.

My guy does this for about 40$, and i think thats right on the money.
if it’s a rear can, i’d just clamp it.

wow. is your car underwater, i know underwater welding is pricey.
i could probably have you ship it here, have my guy weld it in and send it back for less $$.
where are you located? i get a new England vibe since their shops have the luxury of mandated service for registration they kind-of have a racket. my guy is a muffler shop in a less charming part of town so maybe look beyond the big box shops....may even find a fabricator/welder that would do it instead of a car specific shop???
if you’re on facebook find your local tuner community and ask there.

Toronto Canada. And this price isn’t from a box shop, it’s a small one-off (very good one-off) shop that specializes in custom exhausts, primarily for hotrodders (hence the
name
).
I managed to find someone for a lot less, around 100 or so. But that doesn’t include the muffler. Still, way better.
